April 2011 - Bill Carson

Work Broker Bill Carson has been helping Whanganui employers with their recruitment needs for quite many years is familiar to many business owners in town.

“I usually get vacancies through employers contacting me directly because I maintain an ongoing relationship with them,” says Bill.  “One of my team mates Jamarl Franklin, is our Mobile Work Broker and while he is out and about visiting workplaces, he also phones vacancies in to me so I can get on to matching jobseekers to the vacancy right away,” says Bill.

I listen to what the employer is looking for and then work to match the right person to that job.  Ideally I will have the very person in mind - and a couple of alternatives - as the employer speaks to me.  I also have other resources at my fingertips such as the knowledge of others in my team and our computer matching system which helps identify suitable applicants. Some employers like me to deliver CVs so they can get an idea about a job seeker before they ring them for an interview, others are happy for a job seeker to contact them direct. I would normally ring the employer beforehand to arrange a convenient time should the latter apply.

While most employers conduct interviews at their place of business, some prefer to use the facilities here at Work and Income and we are very happy to accommodate this. I can arrange a timetable of interviews for employers and keep the cups of tea or coffee coming during the interview process.

“I still derive a great deal of satisfaction from the smile on a jobseeker’s face who I have helped to get a job,” says Bill.  “This is further enhanced by making the employer very happy with their new employee and knowing I have provided a good service.”

I did a follow up on a Job Ops placement last Monday at a local engineering firm.  The young guy I placed there was from a painting background with no engineering experience at all, but he had a great attitude. The employer thought the same and employed him under a Job Ops contract. After six weeks, the employer stated that “this is the best young bloke I’ve taken on in years, very quick to pick up skills & a great work ethic.”  It’s feedback like this that makes my job so rewarding.  (Job Ops offers a subsidy of up to $5,000 to employers who take on a young jobseeker)>

There are some other good people just waiting for an employer to give them a go so ring for a chat about how we can help on Whanganui 965-8058.
